Student life Perth – get out & about
Some tips on places to go and things to do for students in Perth
Perth is a clean multicultural city with beautiful beaches and parks and loads of nightlife, in addition to its excellent universities and colleges. People come from across Australia and around the world, particularly from Asia, to study here. So, while Perth is an organised city, there are some things you need to know that will make student life in Perth, fun and fruitful.
Perth is a spread out beautiful city with plenty to offer the hungry student. A walk through the city street will reveal an array of tasty treats, including sandwich bars, night markets and rooftop cafes. If you’re looking for something a little more diverse, head for Northbridge and Highgate, where casual dining is the order of the day or night. There are plenty of yummy Chinese restaurants in China Town and loads of budget food for the frugal student. Students also head to Leederville in numbers, where a variety of student pubs and pizzerias is the order of the day. Wednesday nights in particular are worth a visit.
Go to Lake Monger for a bike ride. Take a picnic and some mates and go enjoy a leisurely bike ride before settling down on a picnic blanket with some cold ones while you indulge in some birdwatching around the lake area. A mere 5km from the city centre, this is an easy and quick destination to get to, and well worth the little effort it takes to get there. If you are looking for something a little more exciting, why not head out to the Pinnacles Desert for some sandboarding. The area is surrounded by rocks and dunes, the sunsets are incredible and you are allowed to drive your 4WD in certain areas. Other outdoor areas to visit include Whiteman Park for wildlife viewing. The Perth Hills offer a few places definitely worth a visit, and the Perth Observatory is the oldest operating professional observatory in Australia. Go surfing, hang out at the beach, go canoeing on the lake or whale watching in season, the weather is great in summer, make use of it.
At some stage you’re going to have to forgo your virtual life, get out there and meet real people. Choo Choo’s is a great venue for their Live Band Wednesdays, where locals get to strut their stuff on stage while you shovel down food from the Naughty Food Truck as well as cocktails and beer and whatever you want from the bar. On Wednesday nights, Mustangs is the place to be. This rowdy backpacker bar offers a superb midweek deal – you get a BBQ meal and a drink for $5. Get there early as it gets busy quickly.
